The government has made clear that brownfield regeneration is central to its plan to “get Britain building again,” stating that brownfield land should be the first port of call for new development and proposing a new “brownfield passport” to make approvals for suitable sites more automatic.
The government has strengthened national policy so brownfield schemes are normally approved and expanded the definition of previously developed land.
It has backed this with major funding, including infrastructure investment, the National Housing Bank and the Brownfield Land Release Fund, and with incentives like Land Remediation Relief to support cleanup and redevelopment, emphasising brownfield’s role in boosting housing delivery and protecting greenfield sites
